Club News

Here’s a selection of recent Club news and updates from events from the last months.

Footpath Clearance (August 2026)

Once again the Club visited Bailiffs Wall public footpath to carry out the annual clearance/tidy-up.

Thanks to Club members Paul & Sam to doing the initial ‘heavy-lifting’ by means of one of their tractors!

Other Club members followed up with ‘hand’ tools to do the final bits & pieces.

For the last few years the Club has taken over the maintenance of The Axbridge War Memorial Garden (on the left-hand side going up the church steps from The Town Square).

So far this year there has been a number of visits by Club members to try and keep on-top of things, keeping the weed growth down and replacing plants as and when required.

The plan is to visit again before the end of October to plant out the troughs & beds with appropriative coloured flowers ready for Remembrance Sunday service in November.

President Handover (July 2026)

As June is the end of the Rotary Year, it’s that time for a handover of the President Office/Chain.

Club members, family/friends, guests from other local Rotary Clubs and representatives from the charities supported this Rotary year joined us for an excellent Sunday Lunch at The Lamb with the ‘official’ handover being done afterwards.

Pictured opposite is Paul handing over the reins to Chris. Paul did a quick recap of the Club’s activities during his time in charge, then Chris shared some of his thoughts for the new Rotary Year.

Many thanks to Paul for his leadership and best of luck to Chris, the Club’s membership will support you in any way it can.

In summary, this Rotary year we have supported charities/good causes including:
Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance – £1835
Local disabled child – £600
Cheddar Foodbank – £365
Ukraine Support (via Wrington Vale Rotary) – £200

Foodbank Collection (July 2026)

Donations

The Team

Another collection for Cheddar foodbank at The Axbridge Farmer’s Markets in The Town Square.

We don’t mind being out in and about in the kind of weather, warm & sunny!

The event was the first outing for the Club’s collection stand, big thanks to Past-president Paul for all his work on this.

The team on the day were joined by Club member Tessa Munt MP.

Total donations were £57 and 4 trays of food/supplies.

Footpath Clearance (March 2026)

This was the Club’s annual clean up of this path, as it has been done a number of times before, i.e. keeping on top of things, then it didn’t take as long as before! In fact, 3 Club members were able to carry out this maintenance in about 2 hours.

The stairway/footpath leads from the bypass (opposite the old railway station building) up to the footpath network on the hillside to the north of Axbridge town.

Once again this work was carried out for the full support and permission of Somerset County Council.

Charity Quiz Night (March 2026)

Teams

Our Spring 2026 charity quiz night was held at Shipham Village Hall.

The event supported the excellent work of Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance.

With over 70 participants and along with a raffle on the night the event generated a surplus of £753 – another great result.

Special thanks must go to our new quiz-master for this event, Chris (son of Club member) who while on shore leave (usually entertaining cruise ship passengers in warmer climates!) was volunteered for the role!!
